Medvedev Crimea visit angers Ukraine

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev visited Crimea yesterday to hold a government meeting with Crimean Ministers. The visit has angered Ukraine and has been viewed as a flagrant act of defiance to Western demands that Crimea be handed back to Kiev. Russia has made some attempts however to appease the West. Following talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, a large number or Russian troops have withdrawn from the border with Ukraine. For more go to Reuters.

Royal Mail sold on the cheap

A report released today by the National Audit Office (NAO) on the UK government’s decision to sell shares in Royal Mail has found that the shares could have been at a significantly higher price. The NAO report found that demand for shares was 24 times  the maximum available and criticised government and said that its approach was marked by “deep caution”. Opposition has cited the report to criticise government. Labour’s Shadow Business Secretary Chuka Umunna said “hundred of millions of pounds had been lost to British taxpayers”. For more go to BBC.

Turkish PM to target opposition after election victory

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has vowed to punish those opposed to him following a sweep by his AK party in local elections on Sunday. Speaking from a balcony at party headquarters, Erdogan told supporters that he would bring to account his enemies within politics and the state, whom he has labelled “terrorists” and “traitors”. Erdogan, who draws strong support from  Turkey’s Muslim professional class, has sought to solidify his power since anti-corruption raids by authorities in December targeted associates of him and his family. Erdogan has subsequently removed thousands of police officers and hundreds of judges from their positions. For more go to Reuters.
